AIRBNB cancelled a guest's reservation

Not sure what to do with this. Guest has been very good. They are workers. Leave in the morning around 5am and come back at 7pm. They are booked from the 24th to the 30th.

I did not lay any complaints to Airbnb. They sent a vague message regarding reason. I feel the need to assist the guest. He was informed by Airbnb to leave the listing ASAP.

He has good reviews. Travels a lot with his workers and uses Airbnb most times.

Can I direct him to my VRBO listing? Is there any clash of interests here?

This is all very strange. I’m wondering whether the guest might have been guilty of a third party booking in the past that Airbnb has just caught up on, or if Airbnb’s background check suddenly (and belatedly) surfaced a problem (that would be concerning).

I don’t see why you can’t talk about this with the cancelled guest because this is not a situation where you are doing any of the prohibited actions listed in Airbnb’s off-platform policy (the VRBO booking would be current not future, plus an Airbnb booking is not possible because of the cancellation by Airbnb, so you are not taking the guest off the platform – Airbnb did that):

Here it is.

I was thinking about how this whole process would work. I know ABNB will call him to ensure he has checked out of the listing tomorrow morning(he told them that he is still at work and will be getting back to the listing later in the evening but he will check out early in the morning).

If he makes a booking with VRBO, does he confirm with aribnb that he has checked out even though he is still at the listing but booked under VRBO?

Yes, because he has (or will have) checked out of the Airbnb listing. That’s all that they need to know, not the physical address of the property he is staying at now.

I wonder if Airbnb will tell him what his “potential breach of our terms of service” is.

The only thing I’d be concerned about is that his payment fell through and Airbnb would claw back what they already paid you from your future payouts.

Hi Muddy,

I wondered about that and asked the support but she said that my payment will not be affected. I doubt her response though. Different Support will give you a different response.

My main concern is directing the guest to VRBO and if that can potentially harm my ability to host on Airbnb.

I honestly doubt if ABNB will tell him anything about the reason behind their decision. And that is so scary for me as a host. To think that hosts are easily given the same treatment. I took your advice and screenshot all the necessary information of a guest as soon as booking is confirmed. This came in very handy when ABNB web/app were down right before check-in. I had to send the guest check in code via text message. Saved me.

How would Airbnb know you rented to the guy on VRBO?

I wonder if one of their names popped up on the sex offender list. Sometimes guys on the list might have had consentual sexual relationships with teenage girls. The guy usually swears he thought the girl was 18 when in fact she was 16 or 17. If any of those workers are on that list, I can see Airbnb immediately cancelling their stay and asking them to leave.

According to the law, the community would have to be informed of such person. If that didn’t happen, then Airbnb would be breaking the law. They can’t afford the bad publicity this would bring. That’s the only scenario I can think of but I’m sure there are many reasons why this would happen, none of them good.

I personally would not book them into another listing. God knows why Airbnb cancelled. They must have a good reason.

Did you ask the guest if they know why or have any idea?

If they are as clueless as you are, and have been excellent guests, I would consider shifting to private booking for the remainder of their stay.

They are equally clueless.

I have never done a private booking from someone I dont know.

I would move them to direct as well.

I had the exact same problem with Airbnb during the pandemic eviction moratoriums. It was a long-term tenant moving from another state who had been a guest for over a month. It was completely unfair – Airbnb evicted someone from my home without my permission and without letting either of us know the reason. I am pursuing legal action because I do think this violates fundamental concepts of fairness for a person to be secure in their home. If anyone else has had this experience, please contact me!
