Yes, it will
Hi @tom2,
Could you give us some details about this? I realise bandwidth is not free, but hundreds per month (in what currency?) seems like a lot. What is your hosting provider, and what is the approximate monthly bandwidth usage?
Hi Faheem,
If you know tech jargon we were on a ec2.large instance with a medium RDS but weāve since switched over to Azure but the cost is still $125 USD each month:
@jaquo great suggestion ā let me see what I can do about this!
@anon67190644 sure let me look into the logistics of that, thanks for the suggestion
@Ash953 I was able to scale back the ads on mobile so it should be definitely more user friendly now, let me know if thatās seems okay with you?
You should be able to get a donate button straight away from your Paypal account. Iāve used one before and hardly ever got a donation but the site in question wasnāt even remotely as useful as this one
Hi @tom2,
I know EC2 is an Amazon cloud thing. What kind of rate for bandwidth are they giving you? And what kidn of bandwidth usage are you seeing? It sounds like they are charging you for database usage too. I donāt know how that works.
It might be worth shopping around a little to see if you can get better rates.
Definitely set up a donate button as @jaquo suggests.
EC2 is the Amazon product; and Azure is the Microsoft product so it sounds like @tom2 has shopped around. I doubt you can get much better with Googleās product.
@tom2, the ads now appear as a little sliver on the bottom of my screen which is better. Thank you.
Sure, Iām not claiming one can do better, but details of bandwidth and other usage (I donāt know how DB usage would be calculated) would still be interesting. This forum does not appear to be that active, but appearances can be deceiving. And no doubt there are many people who are passively reading it.
There are some stats here
Interesting. Thanks for the link. 85.6k is substantial, but not enormous.
My phone is useable again! Thank you Tom. The ad integration is still pretty amateurish: I have the word ADVERTISEMENT and then a type-only ad below. However, the ad at the bottom of the screen is now gone, so I can scroll once again.
@anon67190644 - the ad can be anything - images, text, anything - and that comes from the hosting service.
The use of Advertisement above embedded content or news is pretty standard these days. Preferable, actually, considering how much advertising poses as fake news these days.
Here is the same practice on the New York Times.
No. I am not seeing the ad, I am seeing the alt-tag only. Other websites act as you suggest. This one doesnāt. When I view the chatter between the two hosts, I can see that the downstream is not connecting properly. I donāt really care about that to be honest. I was just giving @tom2 a review of what I was seeing on my iPhone.
I use AWS for a much smaller (data) site and pay $75ish a month. So its not outrageous for a site with this much data to be $125. I also agree with whoever mentioned that a āpremium ad free versionā would be a great idea for those not interested in seeing ads.
Hi Tom, please contact me at victor@bettymills.com Iād be interested to discuss helping you defray the operating / hosting costs of the forum. We are one of the largest suppliers or cleaning & sanitary supplies online. p.s. tried to send you a PM but couldnāt figure out how. Thanks Vic 650-645-6260
