Why guests make the bed!

Do you attract a lot of health conscious guests? That could be why many might leave the snacks. Even if they are organic and not as junky as Doritios, you may have a lot of gluten-free guests, or guests who don’t eat packaged foods because they are not “live” food. I know a lot of health conscious people do not eat anything with hydrogenated oil or palm oil that is found many packaged foods.

I think it also might be a polite thing like what Chicago mentioned. At one time I had a jar of packaged fruit bars and granola bars. They weren’t organic…just nature valley brand. Many of guests never ever touched it even though they left behind many junky foods that they fed their kids.

@cabinhost, I get a diverse group of guests, they don’t seem particularly health conscious; I even leave gluten free bars, etc, and guests really don’t eat anything. I just leave the unused stuff for the next guests.

Mine are just the opposite! In their bedroom (house share here), I leave a basket with two waters, and a selection of snacks (pretzels, chocolates, nuts, trail mix). I’ve only started doing it. And they take it ALL…ALL. While it’s meant to be a suggestion to take one or two of what you like…they take it ALL. So, now I’m not leaving such a big selection and if they don’t like what is in there, oh well.

Some guests strip the beds to check on the cleanliness of the duvets and pillows!

I ask guests to leave beds unmade, but not stripped, so I know which ones were used.
(we have 6) and to leave used towels in bathtub or shower floor.
I have never returned to a house that wasn’t VERY clean - I think my small disclaimer stating
"to avoid additional cleaning fees please leave my home as clean as you found it".
works like a charm…

i puzzled over this and realised that I have no idea how guests leave the bed because the laundryman (aka husband) goes in the minute they have gone, collects all the bed linen and loads it into the machine while I’m still waving goodbye … so in this case ignorance is bliss …!

Just stayed at very nice place and my fellow guests and I got into a heated discussion about what to do with towels and sheets on check out. The others insisted that the beds be stripped and sheets put in a pile somewhere…TBD, and the same with the towels. There were no instructions in the manual about any of this. There were no laundry facilities. I was incredulous, I had never heard of such a thing or done it. My personal opinion was that it was insulting to the person that would have to pick up this mess from the floor or wherever, sort of like “I want to make sure you know these things need washed”. I have a friend that throws his used towels on the floor in hotels every day. I think it shows a lack of respect for the person that has to bend over and pick up a lump of soggy towels. Perhaps people don’t want their towels tossed on the floor of their bathroom, so which error would you make, leave them hung up or piled on the floor. In the end we left the beds as they were slept in, I hung up my towel and the other stuffed theirs into a plastic bag, wet or dry, I don’t know. I had asked the host the day before leaving and she of course said to just leave things be. I would recommend that all these things be covered in the book of rules for your location. There are as many different ideas as there are guests. The more things that you that you specify in writing helps everyone.
