When the Competition Lies

As Chicagohost said, it’s subjective. When I went I stayed in Hilo and go up at 5 am to drive over to Kona for the day. Mid afternoon I drove back around the north end of the island. The next day I drove south to take a boat trip to the the lava flow at night. Being from west Texas those drives seemed short to me. :wink:

Yes, I have driven from Hilo-Kona and back more times then I would ever like to remember.

Oh no, I got the joke and made (unsucessfully?) one of my own. Texas is big. The island of Hawaii is small and the other islands are tiny. LOL.

That’s why in my listings I specify how many minutes and miles to get here and there and by what means

I had a young guest gush in his review that it was awesome he could walk to the metro - and it’s at least a 20 minute walk!! Thankfully that didn’t seem to confuse any of the guests that came later.

I once stayed in an airbnb home that was out in the country and the host said the house guests could stroll to town and enjoy the quaint diners - well, it was at least 1.5 miles. Down a twisty, narrow country road with no side walks and cars that drove like wild men. Also said she had air conditioning but the living areas didn’t and there were no windows and no screen on the door. Ugh. Fail.

Oh crap! What’s this “super host” supposed to do for you anyway? Why is he contacting you??? Very very strange indeed. Is he supposed to give you pointers on how to become a super yourself? Oh gawd please. I’m a host because I want to; and I do it because I’m good at it and I go with the flow and run it according to my preferences and hosting style. My place isn’t perfect. It is what it is. I don’t make much money from it. I offer just a bed in the corner of my living room. It’s authentic and sincere, which does appeal to the traveler on a budget. Maybe the higher end places have to bend over backwards and kiss butts. Luckily I don’t have to do that.

I was on the top of the first page on the search results. No filter added. After I declined around 10 inquiries (not booming requests, inquiry only) I can’t even find my listing anymore. I got tired after navigating through 25+ pages. Nothig changed in my listing. I just started declining inquiries based on several factors.

Sort of on topic… What I see misrepresented on people’s sites is ‘wheelchair accessible’ when clearly it is not. Most of the places listed obviously are not and I am not sure what the benefit is to lying about it. I see so many homes listed that have stairs on the front and back entrance and loft beds one is to access by climibing a ladder (and no sign of alternate place to sleep). As one who has a loved one who is in a wheelchair, I find those postings to be really aggrivating and I wish there was a way to call people out on it. There are so many subtile issues for a person in a wheelchair to have to consider (bathrooms have huge barriers) that would never occur to the abled bodied as being an issue.

I also live on a big island - Australia - and it takes a long time to drive anywhere. In Europe you would have crossed a few countries and in Australia you are still in the same state.

That’s terrible, @PDXer - I’m so sorry for that! Is it possible to alert airbnb to these listings?

On each Airbnb listing there is a picture of a flag next to the words, “Report this listing”. Feel free to report hosts who incorrectly represent their listings as wheelchair accessible.

One caveat, stairs don’t necessarily mean that the listing isn’t wheelchair accessible. We would gladly purchase a portable ramp if a guest in a wheelchair wanted to book with us.
