Unpopular Opinion: Airbnb Has Become Terrible

Good article, thanks for finding and sharing it.

It tells me nothing I didn’t already know. My limited “guest experience” mostly supports his findings though we did stay in a wonderful studio in Arroyo Grande CA that was marvelous. I like to think my own ABNB in nearby Grover Beach is also marvelous but I’m reminded of the old saying, “Everybody’s a little strange except me and thee. And sometimes I wonder about thee.”

But it’s a numbers game - I continue to get quality guests who, afterward, gush about their stays. When ABNB’s reputation gets stained enough to affect my traffic, I suppose I’ll check my options. Until then, let me know if you’d like to stay at a genuinely nice place in Grover Beach CA suitable for 4 max. Better rates if reserved direct!

I have to disagree. We have kept our $87/night base price (average to lowish, here), $20/ per stay cleaning fee (low, we’re retired and we do it ourselves) since we opened in 2018. We consistently get 5 star reviews. Great communication, cleanliness, a beautiful suite with comfy beds and high quality bedding, and easy to provide amenities that aren’t costly are our keys. Along with a love for people and appreciation for the chance to briefly meet so many (our suite is in a separate part of our home.) We love providing a great space for them to get away, and they feel that love.

Meant to say, we are consistently at the top of listings in the area, so get plenty of exposure.

I recently discovered that Airbnb seemingly has an entirely different website/portal for pet-friendly properties. I was trying to find something for Spring Break and there was no usual filter for Pets Allowed so I Googled it and found some sub-site that has only pet friendly listings. Seems efficient on their side but not user friendly.

If you add a pet to your guest count then you will be shown the pet friendly listings. You should fill out your guest count before you search anyway, so that you can get the correct price for the number in your group.

Are you referring to this?

Yes! That’s the one.
JJD suggested I add Pet to my search criteria and I recall that I had (but maybe I forgot?)….it just seemed like when I had done the initial search that most of the listings said No Pets Allowed. But I’ve also slept since then
