I purchased my 87 year old father an “electric chair😝” recliner. He ridiculed it. Now he has chronic back pain & routinely sleeps in it. Anyone with knee or hip surgery or back pain or surgery will sleep more easily in a recliner than a bed.
As a Neurosurgical acute care nurse when discharging a patient after their surgery I would suggest sleeping in a recliner. Practically all the men were thrilled. Most women didn’t want to do it.
It will be uncomfortable for a little bit but not very long and it will be so worth it. I’ve known at quite literally a thousand people who have had TKRs (total knee replacements) because I’m a therapist. And not a single one of them has expressed any regret ever. In fact, everyone says, “I should have had this done sooner”. And if the other knee is bad then they wish they had just done both at the same time (though you clearly need more help for that) and immediately plan to get the other knee done. People do indeed dance again
The surgery is simple and straightforward and very very practiced and routine. Even a bad doctor won’t mess it up. But do use a sharpie to mark which knee is supposed to get replaced Truly, it is the only procedure that I can confidently recommend after 25+ years with orthopedic patients.
OTOH, Don’t get a shoulder replacement. I’ve never met a single person who wasn’t worse off from having a shoulder replacement.
Oh and the thing with the pugs isn’t about infection, it is about fall risk. Lots of folks fall because of small dogs and you can’t afford to fall after a knee replacement. It is probably just the doctor’s policy, it’s not uncommon.
Thank you for the support. Likewise, I do know many people in my age group who have had TKR, either one or bilateral, and not a single one regrets it. But it still has me way more anxious than I should be. I’m a wimp. It’s a 15 yo injury that I’ve had surgery on once, but it is affecting my total life style now. Have no choice. The other knee is perfectly fine tho. But regarding the pugs, he flat out said it’s for infection prevention. I’ve never seen a bigger stickler. No leg shaving between now and surgery. I have a small scratch on the leg that the replacement is on and he said if it’s not cleared up he will cancel. Five days prior to surgery I have to start using an antibacterial body wash, and the list goes on. COVID test 3 days prior, will cancel obviously if it’s positive, and a full body check for injuries/scratches the day prior to surgery. So I’m a little freaked out!
Ortho surgeons worry about infections in joint surgery because they are very difficult to cure, and can lead to amputations if they are severe enough. And of course they worry about liability for such infection. The rigid routine may partly be due to the surgeon’s concerns, but it’s more likely demanded by his insurance company.
