Even though it’s hot here in the summer (and very rainy) the city is brilliant at attracting conferences, exhibitions and special events during the summer months. That is fantastic as it makes us a year-round venue.
That’s great! We’re in a smaller town (about 6,000 people), with hot springs in the winter and the lake in the summer. I’m only in my 4th month hosting and didn’t really expect to have any summer bookings since we’re in the hot springs district which is about 4 miles from the lake. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with so many bookings for June and the first half of July.
No go for me as I clearly state in my Rules that each guest must be booked and paid for and I must be provided their first and last name.
Well, I’m back home from my trip to the Adirondacks - the one for which I booked the Airbnb that I complained about in my original post above and this is what happened:
We arrived almost exactly at the check-in time. The home was lovely and the space well appointed except … 1) the host, who greeted us, said rather cavalierly that the WiFi was out and Spectrum said that they likely could get get anyone out until the following week. Mind you, he had known this for at least a whole day, probably more, but had not warned us, or offered any kind of discount. There are lots of places in the Adirondacks with no WiFi. We paid for WiFi. 2) the guest suite, which was in the basement that opened out into the lake front, had no solid door separating it from the main living area at the top of the stairs, just a dog/kid gate, and the host, who left within minutes, had two young dogs, both of which barked and whined the moment the host was gone. I looked at my husband and he looked at me and we both said, “Uh oh.”
Long story short, we didn’t even unpack. We were out of there within five minutes. We called Airbnb and got a full refund. We returned to a non-Airbnb accommodation in another town that we were familiar with from past trips and fortunately they had a motel room open and on the second night were able to switch us to a lake side cottage.
It was a fabulous trip, but not thanks to the Airbnb accommodation, that’s for sure.
- thanks for the update and 2. glad you enjoyed your trip
Regarding the ABNB accommodations, I too would have been out the door for the two reasons you stated.
I’m glad that AirBnb was accommodating. Let us know if you plan to write a review / receive one, or if they are nullified because of the cancellation.
I did get the Airbnb notification inviting me to review which I have not yet done. When the Airbnb CS contacted me the next day to make sure I saw the refund (CS said the host had to agree, which made me laugh) I told him there are some problems there with communication. I explained that he never contacted me after I booked - not once. Nor did he warn me that there would be a missing amenity. Also the property is not really accurately described. It is essentially a private room in a house. With no door at the top of the stairs it is not a guest suite. They agreed and said they would “monitor” the listing. Who knows. But the place was LOVELY. I mean, really, really well done. I just know I need way more privacy and quiet.
I am so happy with where we ended up, though, that he did me a favor.
Interestingly the place I had stayed with my kitten that had the undisclosed camera I got an email within a few hours of reporting it that said her listings had all been suspended pending investigation and that I was refunded in full (it was $92.93 for the 3 nights).
That happened for a very short time. Then it was opened back up without even having received my photos that I had indicated I had in my report. They said that try me host’s had looked around and couldn’t find the camera so she was not in violation of the policy. Then I sent my photos and when I asked what was going to be done I got this response:
due to our privacy policy we cannot release information pertaining to this investigation. You have been refunded per policy, and we will take appropriate actions with the host pertaining to this issue.
Hmmmm…so they can tell me they are suspending her account so she can’t take any more reservations but then they don’t actually investigate and hide behind a veil of “privacy policy” that they actually did nothing.
