Our (my?) sinking ship

oh yes, yelp reviews are hilarious. Did you see the South Park episode on that? so funny!

Maybe. But then again perhaps they imagined it couldn’t be that bad or that one night is worth it so they could leave yet another killer review. People are strange, sometimes.

No I didn’t, but I’m sure it was funny. We’ve all gone review mad these days. We’re conditioned to be picky about stuff that’s so mundane.

A little while earlier today I was standing in line at the neighborhood Starbucks. You’d have thought the girl in front of me was buying a new BMW. Good gawd she kept asking questions about her stupid coffee drink and if it would be better with espresso or with some other thing. They went on and on and he kept crossing out the recipe on the bottom of the empty cup with his Sharpie. She’ll probably sit down and write a Yelp review while drinking the stupid thing.

Did she video the whole thing as well? OMG, Starbucks are shut down!!
ps you should watch the south park episode. If you went off it years ago, like I did, it’s actually funny satire again.

I went through about 5 pages of trustpilot this morning, just out of curiosity. I don’t believe 90% of the super whiners there and wouldn’t really want any of them as guests. Then again I am not into angry people.

Could have been! OMG it was mind numbing to watch. At the end of this long exchange about her drink she sighed and looked over at her boyfriend who was at her side during the whole ordeal, smiling. I don’t think he even got anything.

What page was that one in? Shoot, I missed it. Was it in trustpilot?

The Starbucks story was not in trustpilot. I was recounting an experience I had this afternoon.

And speaking of trustpilot, I left an Airbnb review just for the heck of it.

I cannot believe how many bad reviews Airbnb has :open_mouth:

Did anyone else notice that most of the reviewers only had ā€˜1’ review to their credit? Doesn’t that odd?

I wonder what would happen if we all tried to leave a positive review?

And they are all recent. Especially for customer service! Do you hint their customer service outside the US is lacking?

Most hotel and sublet agencies come to inspect the premises and take their own photos which they post to their own web site. AirBnB does not have on-site inspections. They would have to have them everywhere in the country and even abroad. But there are some people (the affluent ones) who depend on this screening by the agency even if there are photos. Our site includes photos of every room but I suppose people may not trust them, which I understand. Perhaps AirBnB could require them of all hosts and hire an outsider to do the inspection, and charge the hosts for it, or split the cost. This is not only advantageous to hosts but inspires more confidence in AirBnB. They really should consider this.
A host’s own photos might be out of date or very old, and recent damages would not be shown. Or AirBnB could take
their own photos and in that way they are approving the host premises.

This seems like an excessively harsh judgement. I imagine most of the reviews there correspond to people with legitimate complaints. We’ve all had problems with Airbnb. Many of the people on the site have documented them.

I must be missing something. Trustpilot currently shows 7.6 stars. Amazon Reviews | Read Customer Service Reviews of www.amazon.com And yes, Amazon’s customer service has historically been excellent.

airbnb.com is right at the bottom by any measure. Along with some other well known travel sites. All its sister sites rank higher, though most of them still don’t do well. See Trustpilot Search Results

CORRECTION: This was a rating of 7.6 for Amazon (now 7.7), not 4 stars (out of 5). Clearly I fail at reading comprehension. Perhaps I should go back to KG, and do it right this time.

Trustpilot does have positive Airbnb reviews. They’re just in the minority. I think if you left a positive review, it would post. I don’t think Trustpilot is run by the anti-Airbnb underground.

Here’s what I see for Amazon: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.amazon.co.uk

Oh, I see that it’s for UK Amazon. Well those Brits like to complain a lot I suppose. :)))))))

Hi Faheem, Yes I suppose my comments were harsh. It just seems some people will complain about things that I would overlook, especially since most hosts offer way cheaper accommodation than hotels.

One of the reasons Amazon would do better in reviews is because it’s not in the hospitality realm like Airbnb and others. There’s where the nit pickers and whiners come out of the woodwork. I’m sure some are justified in their complaints, but we’ll never really know. Airbnb is a third party; they’re in the middle of these often very complicated problems that have to be handled by some phone bank on the other side of the world. The outcome is not always ideal.

Ok, but that’s still 4.5, not 2.

Agreed, the hospitality industry can be tricky. Having said that, the Trustpilot rating is in line with my personal experience and opinion of Airbnb. I.e. a crappy company that is increasingly concerned about its bottom line, has terrible customer service, and is not above exploiting its only resource, the hosts, to further its ends. Having said that, a lot of the reviews are from unhappy guests too.

Oh, and people can get annoyed at shopping sites too. There’s a lot that can go wrong with a shopping experience as well. But I’ve never had the kind of experiences with Amazon that I’ve had with Airbnb. Their customer service quality levels are night and day.

One major problem with a site like Trustpilot is that there is no way to verify (as far as I can see) whether the review is real, in the sense that it corresponds to a real experience. It could be a lunatic, a competitor trying to make the competition look bad, or any number of other things.

It’s showing as a 2 on my computer.[quote=ā€œfaheem, post:36, topic:10517ā€]

Exactly. Some may be very legitimate. We can’t really know either way. However, if there are dozens or even hundreds of reviews and the scores are low, then I’d tend to believe the overall score.

In any case, it is great fun to read reviews of all sorts because they can be highly entertaining to see what shenanigans the human race gets up to.

That’s weird. What do others see?

2 stars. But 4.5 out of 10. I suspect one of you is referring to 2 stars out of 5 and the other is referring to 4.5 out of 10. Different metrics.

Indeed, I think you are right. I didn’t notice that.
