Our first official bad guest - any help is appreciated

On Facebook, search AirBnB Guests Blacklist You will find it. Just join today myself. And posted as well about a guest I had back in December.

Thanks! I had no idea that it existed.

He is only ‘powerful’ if you let him have power over you.

I’m sure you know now, that it was a red flag when he asked for his wedding guests to have access to your space.

You are the one with the power, you have photos of the sick and damage. You can leave an honest review and mark him down (at least) to three stars so he can never IB again with another host.

Politely request money to cover the damage caused by his party and express disappointment that he allowed his guests to throw up in your beautiful home and leave it there without any attempt to clear it up and damage your place and not notify you or offer to pay for the damage caused.

If he ignores it or refuses to pay ask Airbnb to process under their guarantee.

Know that he will leave you a bad review if you make a claim but likely he is likely to do this anyway now you have called him on his (or his guests actions).

Leave an honest review (don’t mention any claim for compensation).

Please don’t do what @Mexican suggests and contact his work about this. Completely inappropriate and you will sound like someone who is rather deranged.

Likely the guest will leave a negative review now anyway after @happilytorn phoned him about the damages.

As we often say on here hosts should never feel blackmailed into not making a claim for fear of a bad review.

I so agree with this. It could end really badly.

@happilytorn I also agree with whoever said don’t stress too much about the upcoming bad review because it will be seen as an outlier amongst all your excellent reviews. In fact, the worse it is - the better for you. Seems paradoxical but if it’s a truly horrendous ranty one, it will stand out like a sore thumb and it will be clear to any future guests that this person was just weird or that something else was going on.

Your response to the review will be crucial, though. You will need to demonstrate your professionalism. Please come on here and get advice on what to say - there are so many good wordsmiths here!

Best of luck and sorry this happened to you. Oh and put your bloody prices up!!

Threatening a host with a bad review for making a claim… I would be calling Air about it and advising them.

I am also questioning the bill. Vomit is not only biohazard, but lack of respect (which, based on your interaction, has occurred to you by now.) Some things are just biz; this is not. He is the one who should be concerned about the review.

I just had guests check out who flicked ciggy butts all over the yard. I picked them up the first time and the next morning the yard was covered again. Some people might think it’s a small thing but to me it’s a total lack of respect. I showed them the swept up butts and told them if they are their again you will be asked to leave immediately.

Last weekends guests were great, except for the butts… Smokers are addicts who think the world is an ashtray.

My disgusting guest I recently sought review help for was actually worse than I realized. I finally got around to cleaning up (had been so pissed I took the dirty linens and left) and discovered cigarette ashes on the kitchen counter even, not just the floor, stool, patio and yard!

Smokers are still individuals. I’ve known smokers who don’t flick their butts anywhere. They put them in ashtrays or bottles then dispose of the ashes and butts in the trash. Some pigs smoke and when they do they are still pigs.

One bad apple spoils the barrel… Yes, SOME smokers are considerate but in my experience sadly most are not. Its hard when you have a disgusting habit that produces disgusting waste. Hmm what to do with it? If I smash it into the dirt with my foot nobody will notice…

The smell of cig butts, esp. if damp, has a uniquely disgusting smell. I’ve even been in the ruins of a house fire that didn’t smell that bad. It’s weird.

I hate having to do a perimeter sweep for flicked butts, but I am no fan of having to dig butts out of a bottle either. Our recycling rules require that bottles are rinsed. Butts-in-bottles happens often enough that I have made myself a special tool for it, a bit like a crochet hook.
In my husband’s high school days, the kids would put their butts in their pockets so no one would know they had smoked. (He was and is blissfully unaware of how laundry works, and still thinks his mother didn’t know…)
Anyway, that’s what I want. I want guests to put their butts in their pockets.
We are a no-smoking place, and so obviously it is important to me that they be sneaky.

You guys have all been so helpful. My resolution case was escalated and I just received news this morning that I’m getting the full amount of $83 that I requested from his deposit. I haven’t heard anything more from the guest and Air BnB ignored me when I asked about his review… So I’m ready to prepare my own review of him (but won’t post it until after I come back from spring break next week so it’ll be going up on the last day). For all you wonderful wordsmiths out there… please help me perfect this as this is all brand new to me… I’ve never had to give any guest less than 5 star before… So this is what I’ve got so far…

Mark had a group of 10 that stayed at my cabin for his daughter’s wedding. After they left, my screen door had a big gash in it, my shower head is broken off, and there was puke on multiple towels and a bed skirt. When confronted with damages, Mark immediately changed his tune from a great 5 star stay to telling me I’m getting a 1 star and denied all damages. He even threatened to sue me, telling me how powerful he is and his wife is and that they always have lawyers ready. While as a host, I understand accidents (and sickness) happen, I can’t in my good faith recommend Mark to other hosts due to the way he handled the situation.

English isn’t my first language (I learned it at age 15) so any help is greatly appreciated…

Thanks in advance!

Sorry you had a bad guest too. My cleaners have done that before too - so bad they just take the linens and leave lol.

I had to make my entire property (not just indoors, but deck, yard and patio) smoke free due to butts strewn all over. The dogs would pick them up. Yuk!

My town doesn’t yet recycle bottles. From what I’m reading about recycling, we may never. Thankfully I have few smokers and the few I’ve had have put their butts in the garbage which has a plastic liner. I throw the garbage bag out and then wash the plastic liner too. So stinky.

This makes me nervous. What if you get delayed, what if the website is down? More than one person here has posted that they missed the deadline for one reason or another. Please submit is before the very last day.

In your review I would be shorter and less descriptive of Mark’s threats. You don’t want to say anything that will get your review removed. It’s too personal. Remain calm and don’t let him see you sweat.

I cannot recommend Mark to any host. His group of 10 stayed at my cabin for his daughter’s wedding. They left my screen door with a big gash in it, my shower head broken off, and puke on multiple towels and a bed skirt. When I called Mark about the damages he became defensive and threatening. 1 star ratings across the board and a do not recommend.

I appreciate this very much!! I’ll be back in town on Saturday so I’ll have a couple more days before the review window is closed.
