No good deed goes unpunished

So, were his previous reviews 5 star? Just curious.

I feel for you.

But only a tiny percentage of people have celiac disease, and while some doctors believe there is such a thing as sensitivity to gluten outside of celiac, most don’t.

Although I agree that most people who eschew gluten are just being pains in the ass, it is not a tiny percentage of the population who have celiac; it is one percent. I would rather cater to a bunch of people who don’t really need to avoid gluten than accidentally expose one person who truly does have celiac.

Haha, good question. I just looked…and it was a four as well. Even though he mentions all the things I had upgraded since his last stay.

Next time I have a repeat visitor, I’ll do my research.

Live and learn.

I really don’t care why someone doesn’t eat gluten, except, I really want to know if they have celiac disease. When a guest has celiac I am wildly careful to not cross-contaminated. I use paper lines in the muffin pans, disinfect all the work surfaces, and keep my gluten free ingredients in a separate area of the pantry. For people who simply don’t want to ingest gluten for other reasons, well, I am not as anal. My current guest has a wonderful way to describe her relationship with a list of foods… she calls it an intolerance since they come and go. [Poor woman is Italian and can’t eat olive oil! How cruel.]

For the record, only two guests have had celiac, and about 20 guests choose not to include gluten in their diets.

You don’t need 100% 5 star ratings. Assuming you know that you must have been teetering there in the low 80’s? Next time he contacts you to stay you should just flat out tell him…you are looking for 5 star reviews. Or ask him why he gives 4 stars after you’ve made several changes for him.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but 1% is a tiny percentage. It’s not a tiny number of people as a whole.

One percent is not by any means a tiny percentage. It is one out of every one hundred people. I have an autoimmune disorder, pemphigus vulgaris that one in a million people get. That is considered rare, but not extremely rare. Celiac is not considered a rare disease.

Natalie, Ijust had this happen too although it was a new guest. I rescued him off FlopKey, which saved him money, and did extras, such as charging his GPS phone in my car for hours, ( happy to, happy to help) … And had the best conversations with him as they were coming and going. Friendly Canadians. My new BFFs!! And they leave me four stars overall and four for cleanliness due to the bugs (seasonal millipede invasion happening in all of Hawaii, not just here.)

I’m with you. Never never again. I won’t ask for reviews, I won’t leave them. I won’t do any extras for guests.

So over it.

WTF?! I’m sorry that’s just freggin insane.

@Natalie, I feel for you

Does this mean he left you a one-star rating because of that misdeed of yours?

I do feel offended by you mentioning the nationality. I am German myself.

Generally speaking, I haven’t noticed any difference in guests, depending on the nationality. Chinese guests are generally rather shy and speak bad English (let alone German), but they still leave good reviews like most others. Oh, if I do receive a really bad review, it will usually be from a fellow German :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Lol! Actually my worst reviews have consistently come from the French

Generally I try to avoid pointing at any particular nationality, though in some cases I have noticed common occurrences. All my guests have been super pleasant in person by the way …

I left an expensive bottle of Prosecco in the guest fridge because my own was full. The guests duly polished it off before I could rescue it. No way I could tell them it was a mistake. When they left I found a bottle of whisky in the guest fridge. One good turn had encouraged another.

I hear some new craziness every day. Chalk it up to ā€˜can’t please everyone’. I’ve been using this philosophy for a little while and it’s working for me.
