I read this morning in the news about a mother and daughter murder suicide in a luxury Airbnb in Brisbane Australia (full story here… https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/crime/police-investigate-suspected-murdersuicide-after-bodies-discovered-at-luxury-brisbane-airbnb/news-story/41d039df23884110d817931c2135e3f5)
It got me thinking about our situation and other Airbnb hosts… what would you do if you thought the guest checking in was intending self harm? What happens when your Airbnb becomes a crime scene? Is there compensation for lost revenue? Would the negative publicity of your property damage prospective bookings?
This is not something I have ever thought of before or read about on this forum. What are your thoughts?
It’s been a while but I think I’ve read about this that Airbnb apparently has a special team that handles such extreme cases, obviously fast and in person. In cases of death through violent force supposedly hosts do get compensated handsomely for all the trouble but it could be just an urban myth.
That the odds of this happening in my property are about 1 in 5 million, so I figure I’ll deal with it if it happens.
I’ve thought about it and wondered if my place would be a less likely spot because it is attached to my house and I live here. There would be some obvious trauma/drama but ultimately I’d be fine and it wouldn’t probably hurt my bookings.
In terms of someone checking in who meant to do this, I think I either wouldn’t know or they would be using me to ask for help which I would get them.
This may depend on whether you have a loss-of-income clause with your STR insurance.
I doubt it.
I don’t know that I would realise. Guests are guests and some seem very strange to me but probably wouldn’t to others. But I doubt I’d forsee murder / suicide.
