Meanwhile back in the land of the Corona virus

I’m in a shared home situation but I have two bathrooms and have provided guests with a cupboard with their own plates, cutlery, glasses, tea and coffee etc in the kitchen and we agree times for using it @KKC

I work from a private home office, so the only time I see guests really is in the garden and passing through the kitchen.

Given what I know about airborne transmission via Aerosol and asymptomatic transmission I would not host in my home nor would I stay with a host in their home. To each their own.

It shut down for a short time, then reopened, and the governor is trying to avoid a second shutdown. The city has shut down a lot of things, though. Honestly, I haven’t been entirely keeping up with is, since my behavior isn’t going to change either way…my family is already isolating as much as possible.

"So what does this all mean exactly, practically?

Can you walk into an empty room and contract the virus if an infected person, now gone, was there before you? Perhaps, but probably only if the room is small and stuffy.

Can the virus waft up and down buildings via air ducts or pipes? Maybe, though that hasn’t been established."

"It’s not clear just how much this coronavirus is transmitted by aerosols as opposed to droplets or via contact with contaminated surfaces. Then again, we still don’t know the answer to that question even for the flu, which has been studied for decades.

But by now we do know this much: Aerosols matter in the transmission of Covid-19 — and probably even more so than we have yet been able to prove."

Until we know everything there is to know about the virus the safest thing is to stay away from other people as much as possible unless you know where they have been and what they’ve been exposing themselves to.

Yes I have read up on it too, sadly I read little else during my working day, as I live and breathe (pun intended) Covid all day working for our NHS (national health service). I feel comfortable with the precautions I have taken. But absolutely each to their own.

I don’t think the UK is quite a bad off as we are. As long as we in the US allow people to determine for themselves what is best we are going to be unable to control the virus. If I could be assured that my guests were covid free it would be a different matter. I’m so glad I had remodeled the house to separate them already.

I know it is so frustrating. We still have social distancing here in our shops, restaurants and pubs and other facilities open to the public. We have to wear masks when using public transport, and when in shops and leisure amenities.

I went out to the pub with some friends as part of my birthday celebrations last weekend and it was fab (first social outing since March) . Every table had to be pre-booked, register their details in case of an infection outbreak and use handwash. We went to our booked a table and then used what’s app to order drinks brought to our table and settled at the end of the night. I hate queuing for drinks in a busy bar, so long may table service continue

I’m only seeing limited friends, part of a small, regular circle. We are only meeting outside, well distanced (6 ft +) and one non-teacher who is working at her job with the city parks dept is remaining masked outdoors. If at some point if my teacher friends have to return to the classroom I will be unwilling to socialize with them for the foreseeable future. Once the weather gets too cold to comfortably be outside (which is luckily only a few months) I’ll have to reassess what I’m going to do. In my temperate climate I could see having heat up but doors/windows open with fans and masked and distanced but indoors if the people I’m seeing have limited exposure to others. Again, that rules out teachers who are seeing dozens of kids each day in enclosed spaces, unless community transmission drops dramatically.

I agree. Luckily the friends I socialise with are like me and work from home or are furloughed and I trust them to socially isolate outside of our group.

We have only been able to socialise in groups of up to six for the last few weeks before that it was only by household.

Maybe one of those outdoor propane heaters like you see at restaurants…

We are doing similar, it gets chilly at night here we use a propane fire pit.

I love this and hope it catches on and continues! I’m short, and rather plain looking. At our neighborhood brewery, the flirty toots get waited on while the rest of us are like “Hey! You looked OVER me to see her, are you kidding!!!” It’s almost a joke … Well, if it wasn’t so frustrating. Give me an app for a beer any day!!

I have a wood burner fire pit, and a Chiminea and a gas fire pit. I wouldn’t want another large fossil fuel burner. I do have some electric space heaters I could put on the porch. I’ve considered hanging something like heavy ourdoor drapes or putting up a temporary wall on the west side of the porch. That’s where most wind comes from so that could make the patio easier to warm up.

I also have a fireplace inside and an electric throw or two. So I honestly could see sitting inside with lots of fresh air flow as an option. We’ll see. 4-5 months seems an eternity from now.

I haven’t had any guests since early March in my home-share, and don’t foresee doing any strs in the foreseeable future.

But I got an email from a past guest, one of my faves- we just jived from the first message we exchanged when she sent an Inquiry, had a fun time house-sharing, and we’ve kept in touch. She is considering moving here to Mexico, at least for awhile, and asked how I’d feel about her renting the room for a couple of months or so. She’s from Portland and said she’d get a test before she came. I would feel okay about that, as long as we maintained distance for the first couple weeks, since she could test negative, but pick up something on the journey.

The guest bedroom has a separate entrance, and its own private bathroom, kitchen is shared, but not enclosed, in that the large double doors and windows are always open, and the dining table is on the covered outside terrace. And I know she’d be super careful when going out in public. So I’m seriously considering it.

I’d jump at something like that. I hope it works out for both of you.

We’ve started thinking about this, and planning for winter too, which can be really harsh for more than a few months in the UK. It’s often not possible to have more than a bedroom window open, due to freezing air wafting in, enough to take your breath away.

We will stop any going out, apart from walks, including to shops or the pub next door. Just about everything is already delivered anyway, including from the supermarket, separate butchers, greengrocer and fishmonger.

We have a small, brickwalled courtyard by the house, with an ornate fireplace/chimney we’ve never used to date. I’ve bought furniture, built a wood store and arranged for the huge logs up the back of the garden to be chopped and brought down.

It’ll probably still be too cold to sit out there, but we can watch from the windows…

I just put in even more stringent requirements for booking. We just had a guest in one of our Los Angeles listings that brought 3 additional guests (4 people in total) into a 1 bedroom listing and refuse to have them leave. Another guest (who we cancelled prior to check-in) in our whole home rental in Palm Springs wanted to bring more than 10+ people and clearly didn’t read any of our listing or House Rules. After cancellation she threatened that she (and her family) would continue to call us to harass us. It was later confirmed that she was just so stupid that she didn’t realize that we didn’t personally process or collect any of her payments. It is no surprise to me at all if the USA never gets rid of COVID. Such selfish, entitled behavior.

Oh no. I am sorry to hear about your problem guests @AFineHouse what did you do when the guest refused to have the extra guests leave. Did Airbnb cancel the whole booking? Did you have to go over in person to get them out.

They gave the guest the benefit of the doubt and allowed them an hour to vacate. This took us to right now, nearly 2AM, and they finally left.

I finally heard from Census about 10 days ago, after months of no communication. We only have 50% response here in spite of constant advertising. Census was going to be a temp springtime job until the cruise ships showed up. Well…

I’m 73, had TB and later leukemia as a kid. No way am I going out knocking on doors now.

I just found out about Friday training session on Thursday. My doc says hell no. I sent the sorry but I’m not dying for the Census email.

Too bad. As the family genealogist I appreciate the work folks did so that I could find some lost branches of my family, and I know how important it is for reapportioning voting districts and population based funding.
