Locked out guest (£300/400 locksmith bill)

I put 3M double sided VHB tape on the bottom of my furniture legs so that guests can’t move it. It gets old.

I had to look it up as I’d never heard ignorance it but it’s ingenious! I may do that too on my non carpeted heavy furnishings that shouldn’t be moved.

I have to say that I am incredulous at the things hosts claim for. Your listing is a business, not a bloody museum of treasured arts.

And as such we file claims to the responsible party (guest customers) rather than to the fine art insurance company.

I’m surprised at the number of hosts who willingly cover the costs of these disrespectful or careless guests and happily (or sometimes not so happily) just take a loss.

Yeh ok, but the guest in this thread did not deliberately damage anything and it wasn’t their fault that the key broke.

Ah whatever. Hosts that gouge guests like this leave more business for me so…

They were careless to try to get the key to work in the wrong house and so it was their fault. A host requesting reimbursement for damages here is far from gouging but glad you are happy with your guests.

Why not?
The guest damaged someone else’s property by accident, in a normal situation she should pay, and in most cases her liability insurance will cover this.

I thought the OP said it broke because the guest put it in the neighbours lock instead of theirs? @Magwitch - but am rather confused so perhaps not

@kkc i think some host have to stop thinking a smart lock is tolerate or accepted in every apartment block around the world. Unfortunately, it is not, for some keys u cannot be copied unless the code is given to locksmith. And management will issue a max of 3 keys per apartment.
In Sydney you have a swipe for the front door and the lift u cannot go anywhere else that the floor ur swipe is set for if i live in floor 7 my swipe cannot take me to 11, if i don’t have a car space my fob cannot access the car park area, same with door u have restricted door system. And on those type of building even a doormat is not tolerated.

That’s fine. Those hosts should have to eat the locksmith bill then. People want to Airbnb spaces that aren’t Airbnb friendly that’s fine but the guest shouldn’t be punished.

That’s an interesting view point. The Airbnb experience of living like a local is watered down if you adjust every thing to suit your guests. It’s not too much to ask of guests to take some responsibility for their actions, they’re grown adults after all not children who need protected from everything that can go wrong on their travels

I’m sure that the guest didn’t put the key in the wrong door deliberately. Olivia, you didn’t answer Helsi’s question about whether the incident was when the guest was using the key/door for the first time.

How easy is it to go to the wrong door? Someone above mentioned that the guest had gone to the ‘wrong house’ but would it be more accurate to say that this is an apartment door with identical doors along the corridor? And pretty close by?

If that’s the case, don’t you have any signage, a nameplate or prominent numbers? You wouldn’t need them in ordinary circumstances of course, but now you’re running a business in the apartment it will probably be necessary for some decent signage for guests.

How is the lighting in the corridor? Can you improve the visibility?

I find the viewpoint that the host is not responsible for always ensuring that the guest can get in to be interesting as well, and not in a good way. This post is not about “everything that can go wrong on their travels.” It’s about one thing that hosts have a lot of control over. You know this, you said

That’s the bottom line. This is your responsibility as a host.

Let me give an example to show I’m not just throwing stones from my glass house. I don’t have STR insurance. I won’t bore you with the reasons why which I’ve mentioned in other threads. This is my choice and it may not be a wise one. If a guest does something like start a fire in my rental room and I have to pay for it out of my pocket, that was my choice. Being human I would probably fume at the guest but it wouldn’t change the reality of my bad choice.
