How to handle review for racist guest?

I can hear a voice of the grandma of my host family in Kenya: o those mzungus and their problems :joy:

I mean worldwide. If we don’t stop climate change there will be no humans so the problems you list won’t exist.

It is not the slightest bit in jest. Climate change exists and will wipe out human life regardless of circumstance or viewpoint; if we don’t reverse climate change human life will cease to exist.

I might skip mentioning anything at all in the review about what the guest said. She’s being racist about her own culture which is a hard thing to explain without saying she herself was of that culture. You are opening a can of worms that would backfire on you because Air is super sensitive about these things. Just don’t leave a review at all.

I understand it feels really bad when guests act this way. But to assume it is racism is to make a decision about someone we really cannot know. Instead they could’ve been gang raped by muslims and otherwise, have had no contact except being exposed to biased media. It feels really weird to have people in your home who express views you would otherwise, never allow.

My friend was raped by a bunch of black men. Years went by and we had not one person of color living here. The moment she saw a few black men in town, her body began shaking. Bumps came on her face. I’ll never forget it.
She has not a racist bone in her body. We are practically middle aged now and her best friends are a black couple.
The thought never crossed my mind she was racist. Even when what others would view as ā€œdiatribeā€ came out of her mouth. Her heart is just too big to be able to keep that up for long. Met one black guy she liked and she did better.
But to this day, had she rented via airb&b when her husband was on a trip, and a group of black men arrived, I have no doubt it could cause her nightmares. These ā€œgroupsā€ are still not seen here, thus she hasn’t really had exposure to move on. It is really odd we humans think we can surmize each other so well, when often, we cannot. Again, JMHO. If you are a Christian, remember to pray for them. Tell them you’ll be praying for them when you hear this type of stuff flowing out of their mouths. There are alot of ignorant people in the world, I am sure I am part of that group to some extent. Hope you have a great week~

I totally disagree with you. If a person who belongs to a group does something bad to you and you extrapolate that everyone of that group should be murdered you are a racist. I’ve had bad things done to me by men. If I adopted a view that all men are evil, I would be a bigot.

Ellen I guess we’ll just agree to dis-agree on this one
We can all be bigots and intolerant of others who are -also- intolerant of others …in some way.
Even to the point of proclaiming rubbish. Yet becoming what we despise gets us nowhere.
Again, JMHO

Looks like you’ve not fully read and thus understood my post at all

Isn’t everybody a racist?

I just provide accommodation, see no need to discuss such issues with Guests…

I take your point and appreciate your response - racism is not a charge one wants to throw around carelessly - but I have no difficulty whatsoever recognizing the things that were said in my kitchen as being flat-out racist. There was a comment about light skin verses dark skin… why can’t Sikhs just keep their religion behind closed doors, why do they have to always be wearing turbans… Canada is a European country and thank god because indigenous people could never have advanced society… and more. These two young people were born in Canada and grew up in a suburb of Toronto. He is Caucasian she is Russian/Bangladeshi. Her father is from Bangladesh.

So anyways, I’m just not going to give them a review either way. I’m glad I came here to the forum before I reacted.

Good point Como. And wise words. Though, I didn’t feel any need to discuss such things. They were having a cup of tea in my kitchen table, started chatting to me and I simply asked them what part of Toronto they live in. They took it from there.

The best advice, K. That is what I have decided as well. I’m just going to skip the review process. But this has been a good discussion. I appreciate all the feedback.

You’re welcome. I’m surprised though that Russell Peters has never come up on this thread yet

maybe cause he’s not that funny. do you know Sugar Sammy from Montreal? if not, really worth checking out.

I’ll check that one out, I mentioned Russel Peters because of his relevance to what you mentioned, and him being Canadian.

Yes, I know. Still not that funny IMHO. Sugar Sammy is Indian as well. He does shows in 3 different languages. He’s a brilliant comedian.

There’s many great comedians Canada has produced.

We’r e a funny bunch! Are you from the UK?
