Thanks JF. I totally agree with the conclusion of the article. It is a choice we need to make. I wear a mask always when I’m out and especially cleaning, but we have to put things in perspective. I think we each need to make our own decisions on this. Here is the conclusion of the article above.

Seriously, do what you want.

We all know fomite transmission is low, but for the sake of a few hours you could virtually eliminate it from your listing, but you prefer the money.

I’m not too worried about surface contamination either, especially not if I’m not going to be touching most things in the room for more than 24 hours. If I were trying to flip a room in 4 hours… well, I just can’t imagine it so I’ll leave it at that.

Once I get the vaccine I’ll be opening back up and may do back to back bookings. I’ll have to see where we are with case loads and the more contagious variants.

I feel like I won’t ever go back to back-to-back. The buffer is easier on me and my listing.
But then I also feel I won’t ever go back to shaking hands, and I’m sure I will…

I definitely like having the day between. But if there is pent up travel demand I may be totally slammed with dog boarding. I’m like Newton’s first law: when I’m at rest I tend to stay that way, but when I get busy, I get busy. Since I’m stuck here anyway I might as well make as much money as I can. I also see the day coming when I might have to slow down due to mental or physical limits. However, it’s really just idle speculation until I get there in a few weeks or months.

@LisaCharlie - In regular times (when the heck was that again?), our caretaker asked for 10am check-out and 3pm check-in to give him 5 hours. Our house is approx 2k/sqft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, hardwood floors.

We’re completely closed and have been since March 15. No idea when we’ll reopen. When (if) we do, I think we’ll require two or three days between check-out and check-in.

We use the money to help pay for our medical bills for our adult disabled son. Plus, I can actually work outside the home with Airbnb. I am very glad Airbnb is around. It gives us a lot of security - and hopefully in the future for our son … (after we kick the bucket!)

You should see the amount of alcohol left at our place since most of our guests are here for weddings! They all fly in and have to leave it behind! Omg! I only like beer myself, but the booze I bring home… ! Funny though, all the empty boxes and cans and bottles are expensive and I get the leftover Coors Light - HA!

I clean my own rental also but it’s not as big as yours. Check out is 10:00am, check in is 3:00. It takes we a good 4.5 hours to get it clean, I can’t imagine if I had one hour less to do it. I’ve never had anyone complain, but I sometimes tell guests they can stay until 11:00 if I don’t have a turnover that day.
I see someone wrote that they don’t do this because of covid. I am very confident that my home is covid safe. I go in with a N95 mask, gloves, shoe coverings, and my top rated air purifier in hand! I sanitize Everything, and get bedding out of the house before I ever begin to clean.

Covid on surfaces is not really an issue. I am not at all concerned about fomite transmission, personally. I stopped putting my hands in my mouth when I got pinworms in kindergarten :rofl:

The real issue is what is in the air. The aerosols. And while a mask helps, it is not really reliable unless you have had a n-95 professionally fitted to you. In healthcare, they do this with us by trying different sizes and seeing if we can smell scents. If you don’t have that kind of mask, it’s best to let the aerosols settle and that can take many many hours. That’s why we leave a day in between guests. And the guests we do have appreciate it actually. We have had a high occupancy since we re-opened in July and many guests have told me that they felt comfortable staying with us precisely because of our precautions. Guests (at least the smarter ones) don’t want to come into a unit that just had other guests in it. If they do (e.g. are not being cautious), we don’t want them anyway.

Me either! I never would have tried the empty night in between if it wasn’t for Covid, but I am so grateful because it has made this business soooooooo much more friggin tolerable. It’s night and day and I can’t imagine going back to back to back.

BTW, I just got my invitation for vaccination today from my state for next week (because I have a provider license). Not sure if I’m going to do it right away or not (I got the swell up and die type of issue to consider), but not sure it will change anything anyway, since my husband won’t be able to get one until end of April. Though it is interesting to see how this will slowly change as vaccinations happen.

I also don’t particularly want to go into a unit (or hotel room) that just had a person in it cleaning.

Agreed. We have some credits on ABB and have been thinking about using them for a drive-distance cabin or something. Our plan is to arrive one day later than our check-in date, to feel safer.

That’s something. When we could host – before our current lockdown that began Dec 26 – I wondered at one turnover why I could not smell the small unpleasant mess I found. I realized it was the mask.

That’s what I did on my last trip to help the elders, arrived a day after the Airbnb reservation start date. I figured there’s no way to determine if a cleaner left just prior to check in.

CDC recommends 24 hours between out/in so respiratory particulates can settle on surfaces (thus no longer airborne) when it is not possible to open windows & doors to ventilate the property for a minimum of 3 hours. Hard surfaces can be wiped clean.

n Layer the 24 hours with a high MERV (>=13) HVAC filter that can remove viruses for extra protection.

FYI—i read that Airlines have changed their air circulation filters to be fine enough to filter out viruses.

Please reconsider this…
