Guidance needed on dramatic drop in views

I agree with you. The commenters on this particular site are very liberal. So on here you are asking the viewpoint of a liberal audience. If I go on other sites, I read that guests refuse to travel to ( insert liberal state of choice ) Portland Or…Or anyplace in California. I do not think politics has anything to do with the drop in Florida bookings. I might suggest you share your listing link, but that would ruin your anonymity here. There are many fb pages/ sites discussing this and discussing metrics, and oversaturation of markets…so go to some other places to discuss the dropoff that are not anti Florida.

There’s a big difference between choosing not to travel to a state whose politics you just don’t happen to agree with and travelling to a state that has passed laws which take away human rights and put minorities in danger, and whose politicians have actually said “You’re not welcome here”.

Do we just call CS to remove categories? And do you think Scenic View as a category can hurt a liting, and if so can you further explain how…? One of my houses is listed as a scenic view…there is nothing scenic view about it at all. A normal backyard on a dead end street. The other house is listed as Surfing…but the ocean is 6 miles away and the creek behind the house does not move for surf. That house however Does have stunning scenic views…but it’s not categorized as such. I have to remove Surfing…do you think I should remove Scenic View too?

I sure would. If a guest books a place in the “Scenic View” category, only to find out it’s a normal backyard on a dead end street with no scenic view, seems like the guest would be justified in complaining, giving a bad review for accuracy and “Overall” and demand a refund.

Guests don’t know that it’s some AI bot assigning categories, rather than the hosts choosing them.

And I have my doubts that Airbnb would take responsibility, say “Oh, it’s our fault for the listing being miscategorized” and remove the review or cover a refund.

@georgygirlofairbnb indeed, I don’t think my drop in views has anything to do with politics and I doubt grandma will not book my unit and decide not to visit baby grandchild because of local politics, or woman will decide to go to a plastic surgeon outside of Florida because of politics.
Alas, I wish everyone would stay away from FL, including all the people moving here who are pushing big increases in the price of in real estate. If people avoided FL, maybe real estate prices would drop and I would go on a real estate shopping spreee :).

Hmm, I asked my sister in law and another person we know with multiple units in Florida, one has most of theirs that serves Orlando and SIL is around Coco Beach, both said no changes, seems slightly down overall for a while, but they attribute it to the extra amount of new people over the last few years who have become hosts and flooding the market place.

I really don’t believe the average person gives to F’s about the politics of a state or city or the hosts, they aren’t marrying them, they are staying somewhere and doing their thing when it comes to their vacations. Yeah, I know one person who is crazy in this way, they won’t even step foot in some states and are flabergasted at how we have survived visiting there, figured we would be killed or something for the politics there  but, believe me this is an extreme person and doesn’t reflect the average person.

I subscribe to the saying ‘vote with your pocketbook’ and I think, without evidence, that folks look at these deep red states as danger zones and if given a choice, are not prime places to go.

Might it be because it’s the end of Summer, kids are back to school and holidays are over? I don’t think many people would plan a trip to Florida in September. But I can imagine interest picking back up again later in the year as it gets colder in the North East surely?

How do you remove all categories? I don’t host in Florida, but upstate NY. However have also had a dramatic drop in reservations this summer. I do think the previous inputs are right about the A1 algorithm. Sorry, not sure what the solution is. I’m thinking of listing with HomeAway, though pricy.

So you wouldn’t consider gays, immigrants, pro-choice on abortion, and all the other people laws have been passed against to be “average people”?

You don’t need to be an “extreme person” not to want to support the economy of a state where the elected politicians propose charging a woman having an abortion or even taking an abortion pill with murder.

I don’t know. I’m pretty sure you have to get Airbnb involved but you replied to my post about promotions. Find the person who suggested removing categories and reply to their post they might be able to tell you.

The removal of all categories definitely fixed the issue for me. For years I was on the first page of search results for my area. Last fall I fell down to below listings outside my geographical area. I tried everything and tried repeating everything and nothing worked. I finally had all categories removed a few weeks ago and today my listing showed up number one for searches in my area!! I have heard similar stories from other hosts. My bookings were down so much that I had mostly VRBO and private bookings this summer - a complete reversal of previous years. I know there are are market factors at play but when you drop down precipitously and the other factors don’t seem to fit your situation then I would say keep looking for the cause.

You remove all categories by asking customer service/help desk. They may say you can do it (you can’t) or they can’t do it (but they can) - just keep pressing because they can and will do it. they have a special team who did it for me and for others. It takes about 3 wks they say and they will tell you the categories have been removed. My placing in search results went from effectively zero to page 1 or number 1 again.

@debflak …but here is the mystery: I have a second unit in the same building and that unit (with categories and all) gets 10 times the number of views than the unit I’m having problem with…how is that possible?

Thank you, very helpful!

Yes, I agree, it’s a mystery but I think the nature of the problem itself is a mystery. The categories don’t cause a problem for most listings - only some listings are affected and there doesn’t appear to be rhyme nor reason for the problems caused - at least not that anyone has identified yet.

You write " you may not like to hear this " really , what part of " reading " do you not understand ?
Besides ,the totality of you post is in line with your typical dribble , your name fits you !

You are quiet far off the mark with your post , you must be having fun with it

Disagreeing with others’ opinions here is fine, personal attacks are not.

So, does anyone know how to better define the listing location? As it is now, my listing will appear out of a very broad area that includes nearby neighborhoods; I’d like to eliminate nearby areas and limit it to its own zip code and not a radius of 6-10 miles.
