Guest reports terrible smell BOOKING.COM issue

It’s not dangerous when you use the proper protection, etc. It works well to get rid of mold that can kill you…

This is the review. Not something I would take a chance on expecting a domestic cleaner to use.

“NEEDS FULL PPE, Body suit, mask, eye covers, everything covered.
I used to work for a mold remediation company so that’s how I know the proper steps and that full PPE is needed.
I got lazy and started spraying this small bottle around thinking “residential size” “small bottle” sold on amazon to anyone” so it should be fine just to spray around for the stains after cleaning, I’ll just wear a fullshirt and long pants… WRONG

I had no PPE, only fully clothed and thought was being ‘careful’ and somehow got some of the chemical on my body. Upper left chest area and upper left back areas are effected.

Exposure was almost four weeks ago and I’m still unable to wear a real shirt (only a cami with the strap up on the right side, strap down on left and half of a bra the same with the right side up only, my left side has been completely exposed for at least three weeks while my skin heals. (picture is somehow flipped, used front phone camera) this has kind of ruined my life. this whole time I have had no video calls (I’m a business owner) no in person meetings, I’ve been out of sight this whole time, which kind of works these days anyway.

There were three solid days of screaming pain deep into my nerves on my back and front chest areas. This stuff somehow got into my pores or something, but I could feel my actual nervous system work. When my system triggered it was like stabbing electric pins traveling around up and down my spine and out to my back shoulders and back. It was soooo painful!! meanwhile my skin was blistered and all different colors. I couldn’t put patches or anything on it because it was painful and I didn’t want to disturb the skin (it would probably peel off at that point) so I kept dabbing water on it and would apply numbing cream a few times a day at least (I’m now down to twice a day, sometimes three and can shower every other day at least now) At this point it is still healing, there are some bad spots left, and the pain is moderate, manageable and seems to tingle/tickle/sting at this point, so slowly but surly it’s getting better.

The attached picture is just of my back and is about 3.5 weeks after exposure so WELL into the healing, Imagine what it used to be!!! BE CAREFULL with this, FULL PPE for your own good!!

I’m a tough person and super optimistic so I got through this thinking the next day would be better, what a mistake I should have went to the hospital asap. I might be better off today if I had. So if you are exposed, don’t take any chances and go to the ER ASAP. It crept up on me slowly after exposure, so SHOWER right away after use!!!

Exposure day: felt nothing, totally active
Next day: what is that little bump, did something bite me? (on my front upper chest)
Next morning: husband and son say (ewww mom, what’s that rash on your back?? looks gross! (started as a red blotchy rash that poked out from under my sleeveless shirt) 3rd day: This stings and hurt and owe owe owe, holy crap, can’t even wear a shirt… can’t sleep, every movement triggers my nervous system… and it got worse and worse for the next few days…
5th day or so - ok not as painful as yesterday, I think I’m on the mend now… just keep applying the ointment and caring for it with water until it heals…(still in major pain but that was the turning point and has been slightly better each day since)

today is One month later (almost to the day) this picture was from about a week ago. the back part used to go from a little on the other side of my spine, all the way up to my neck, down to where my bra line should be, and all the way to my shoulder and under my pit a little bit. You can see in the picture that it’s reduced a lot. the skin that is healing seems not to have a scar (I’m worried about the deeper parts but will wait till it clears out and will be using those scar reducing patches) just don’t want to put anything on it yet, that stuff is actually healing pretty good on it’s own, every day I wake up better and better. I just started working out again two days ago and am pushing myself to continue, but going three weeks without my normal routine has me feeling like I’m in a rut. :frowning: not ok Hopefully soon I can wear a shirt and the rest of my bra!!!

Right at this moment, it itches and burns, I’m not touching it, just water dabs with a towel and numbing ointment still. What a nightmare!! Don’t wish this on ANYONE so PLEASE HEED MY WARNINGS and instructions for proper use!!

This picture is after almost four weeks of healing, it was so much worse and SUPER painful. If you think this looks bad, imagine 10x worse so be CAREFUL (I was careful too, wear full PPE!!!)

Also, yes, the bottles tend to decay because the chemical is too strong. This stuff will 100% leak if it’s stored, this is not meant for storage. Use what you use and send the rest down the drain, rinse the bottle a few times and recycle it.

If I weren’t a stupid idiot about it it would be 100% product review because it really does what it’s supposed and I think it’s the only thing on the market and it’s used by professionals too. So be professional about it! :)"

I’ve had nothing but good experiences with this product. The thousands of people who have bought it also have had nothing but good experiences.

I didn’t contend that it isn’t effective, Rolf. I just wouldn’t want to use such a heavy duty poisonous chemical product myself, nor expose my cleaner to it or my guests. Not to mention how residues might pollute the air and waterways.

TRUE we are fairly new to airbnb and been with only 5/6 months and had a SCAMMER do just what you said. reported BOGUS THING daily 1st was found a wet dish in cabinet, next day was wifi toos low, next day something else, I made MISTAKE of saying OH SORRY previous gues tmusta left wet dish when they did wash their dishes. and I sent him $50 for inconveneincne as he said he had to rewash the wet dishes. BIG MISTAKE. then when he STAYED ALL THE NIGHTS when he left only THEN dsid he REPORT false : wrappers under bed and nightstand, dirt/dust entering daily(LIED SAID HE HAD TO DEEP CLEAN DAILY) this is a 450 ft studio we are talking about, and my family lives there for 2 weeks at a time, and we have NEVER had that happen. he then claimed his dauther has allergies asthma and this bothered her (EVEN THO THEY STAYED THE FULL STAY! AND did NOT report this during the stay) as he wanted to scam/bully me into caving and GIVING HIM FULL REFUND BACK. He left us our only 1 star review(all others are 5 star) and he demanded his full refund. WE STOOD FIRM AND DENIED IT, and airbnb supported us, and said he had NO PHOTOS of the wrappers, dust/dirt daily, and never reporeted it during his stay, only AFTER his full stay did he lie/report. i will NEVER offer a partial refund during a stay again to scammers I WILL SUGGEST FROM DAY 1 IF THEY COMPLAIN/LIE to yes vacate and full refund if they are unhappy. as I dont need it booked with scammers , and I or family can use it then. sttaistics show every 50 folks in their will be a scammer, oh joy!!

Statistics may show that, but I have been hosting since 2016, have had about 100 guests, and have thankfully never encountered a scammer guest. A couple of PITA guests, but no actual scammers.

It helps that I have a simple homeshare listing, only host solo travelers in one guest room, and am in the countryside on the outskirts of a touristy beach town. So it seems to attract really nice, easygoing guests.

But I have property managed 2 small stand alone places, and rented out my 4 bedroom house on long term lease for several years, plus I’m old, so I’ve had many years to learn to spot people who are going to be a big hassle, including those who present themselves well and talk sweetly but then turn around and screw you.

I used to pretty much always trust people, assuming everyone had good intentions, until they proved themselves to be untrustworthy, now I neither trust nor distrust them, but figure I’ll find out soon enough what kind of people they are. And I’ve known entitled, demanding people in my own family and know they never appreciate anything you do for them, as they feel they deserve whatever they want.

When guests make up complaints to try to scam free stays and refunds, most would probably be offended and deny being called common thieves. But they are, because doing that is really no different from stealing money out of your bag or wallet.

My experience has also been very positive. I’ve been hosting one house since 2010 and two houses since 2020 - that’s more than 4,500 guests across around 1,400 bookings. This is the first time I’ve had anything that even remotely resembled a scammer or serious issue. I suspect hosting in a fairly small, remote town like Kaikōura, which is heavily tourism-focused, probably helps.

I do have one slightly amusing (in hindsight) story from about a year ago - though it wasn’t actually a guest.

Late one afternoon I got a call from my head cleaner, Alison, asking if I knew a guest had arrived with a caravan and plugged it into our power. At first I wasn’t too concerned… until I realised I didn’t have any guests.

Alison approached the caravan, introduced herself as the property manager, and asked what the woman was doing there. The woman angrily responded that she had just bought the property and slammed the caravan door shut. There was no tow vehicle, and the caravan had a wheel clamp on it.

Alison went into the house and turned the power off to make the location a bit less attractive. I reported the situation to the police. With new guests arriving the following day, I was hopeful the police could move her on, but I also prepared to head up there myself the next morning (we live two hours away) with a grinder and tools if needed - she absolutely could not still be there when guests arrived.

The following morning, the local constable called me from the site. The caravan was still there, but the woman wasn’t. He discovered the wheel clamp wasn’t actually locked and removed it. He also mentioned she was known to them and had mental health issues. Normally he would have towed the caravan to the police station, but given her state of mind, he didn’t want her returning and finding it gone. Instead, he towed it off the property and parked it on the side of the road.

While none of us (myself or the neighbours) were thrilled it was still nearby, the immediate problem had been resolved. Unfortunately, it didn’t end there. The next day a neighbour told me she’d come home to find the same woman standing on her deck, charging her phone from an outdoor power socket. When asked to leave, the woman became agitated and attempted to kick her. We also realised she’d been accessing our properties to use outdoor taps for water.

At that point, several of us complained to the council, as it wasn’t reasonable for someone to be living in a caravan on the roadside, and we also lodged trespass complaints with the police. Eventually, the council worked with police to have the caravan towed to Christchurch, and the woman was admitted into care (I don’t know the details).

I call it amusing now, but it was pretty stressful at the time. Ultimately, I see it as a freak occurrence - once it was dealt with, there was no indication that any changes were needed to reduce the likelihood of it happening again.

I had a long term tenant who contacted me a month or two before her lease was going to run out, saying there were rats in the house. As it was a 100 year old house, albeit with many renos and upgrades having been done, I didn’t doubt her complaint and told her to call the exterminators, send me the bill, and deduct it from the rent.

She replied that they wouldn’t want exterminators, as they were Buddhists and didn’t believe in killing other creatures. So I suggested they get a cat. She kiboshed that as well, saying they couldn’t be a party to any creatures being killed, even if done by a natural predator.

I then suggested they get live traps, rehoming the rats to the forest, away from human habitat. She said they had tried live traps, but didn’t catch anything.

I asked her what exactly she expected me to do about the rat issue, as she was rejecting all of my attempts to resolve the issue. She said a reduction in the rent. As if that would somehow help the rat problem.

I refused, and when I got back to my town a month or so later, found out that the entire neighborhood had been plagued with rats, it wasn’t just limited to my house.

Mind you this tenant was a hoarder and had moved in with multiple pick-up trucks loaded to the gills with her possessions. Most of which she had piled up in their boxes in the shed, as it wasn’t actually stuff she used, but stuff she didn’t want to get rid of. I never saw inside the house before they moved out at the end of their lease, but friends who knew her and had been over to visit said the inside was also cluttered and overfull of stuff.

While the whole area had rat issue, I’m sure that having piles of stuff everywhere, for the rats to hide out in and make nests, didn’t help matters.
