Like TuMo, I thought it looks quite arty, and I love your suggestion of leaving it to be pointed out by your housekeeper. I recently had to sand an oak dining table, after spilling a solvent. I have a small electric sanding tool, called a Mouse, from Black & Decker. Much faster, easier than elbow grease!
