Construction noise- should i warn?

My excellent neighbours (on the other side of my semi) talked to me about it, showed me the plans, told me about time frames and asked if I wanted to meet with their architect with any questions. I didn’t. I trust them. They did the work themselves and it took between 3-6 months. They wouldn’t start until 10 a.m. and would stop by 7 p.m. It was fine.

The other neighbours (on the other side of me - good times) didn’t say ANYTHING to anyone, moved out, went to Europe (we’re in Canada) and the entire house was gutted and under construction for TWO YEARS.

The doctor thought I was actually having a heart attack and sent me to the hospital because it was SO stressful (walking up to 6 guys a few inches away from my bedroom window with no warning at 6 a.m. on a weekday) and I started having sleep problems as a result. So yeah some small reno, no problem. Major construction that affects sleep/sanity? I’d say it’s a courtesy to let someone know.

I agree that it’s a courtesy. My neighbors aren’t that courteous.

Agree completely. I believe hosts should let guests know in advance. Some guests will be comfortable with the noise, but for some it would be a real problem. Being Airbnb guest myself, I prefer knowing this kind of details in advance.

My neighborhood removed several large long leaf pines (tall, surface roots, high risk of blow over during a hurricane) from our area. Due to 95 (35C) degree plus days in the summer, yard & construction work starts at sunrise and ends by 2:00. I was unaware of the tree removal. At 6:00 am I get a phone call demanding that I stop the “logging” because they were on vacation and wanted to sleep.

It was only one morning however I think if I had let them know in advance, it would have saved them annoyance and me a difficult day and negative review.

Long story supporting letting people know in advance, it sets expectations.

People are so ridiculous.

Thanks everyone for the great comments and suggestions. I have alerted the upcoming guests of the projects, told them the approx hours of the workers. So far no changes to the reservations.

Ridiculous? Really? If I was woken at 6am by chainsaws I’d be pretty irritated!

It loooks as though you’ve had plenty of helpful replies here already but I’ll just add my voice to those recommending that you warn your guests in advance. We had a situation where we were doing some work ourselves on our own property - we explained to guests in advance and all was well.
