Actually, I’ve read how that scam works in a third way. They book through the platform, but say they have another place to stay for free, so they won’t arrive for the booking and the host can rent those dates out privately or through another platform. And because they won’t actually be staying, they propose that they and you split the money for the booking that their “company” has paid for the booking, and that the host send them back half the money.
Then the payment for the booking suddenly is declared invalid.
These and other scammers have been targeting new hosts for years. As well as not $ scammers, but guests who intend to throw a party or use the rental for other nefarious purposes, but lie to the host about the reasons for booking.
