I think Airbnb cancels the booking if the second payment doesn’t go through. But I don’t know if it just gets automatically cancelled or they notify the guest of the issue first and allow time to work it out.
And no, as hosts we are not given the info as to whether a guest has only paid half up front or the full amount unless the guest tells us that.
A CS rep once told me the guest had paid half upfront when I called re something I was confused about on that booking- it was a long time ago, so I can’t remember why I contacted them, but it wasn’t about the payment and there was no issue with the guest making the second payment nor with the guest, who was great.
Good question. Don’t know the answer. They should, but I’d suspect they don’t.
I’m pretty sure that the second payment is charged at least a week before check-in, and that the 2 payment option isn’t even offered if check-in is less than a week from the day the guest books.
First time I hear that Airbnb also offers seperate payments. I’ve only heard about it from VRBO but since we offer a simple accommodation the guest can usually afford the $50 nightly rate in one payment
I have done a couple of last minute bookings but only for people who were well reviewed and with appropriate attitudes. Both were for people who either booked something else or had booked a nearby hotel that was kind of terrible. They turned out to be great guests. But I only do that if the payment isn’t a problem!
Payments are handled by Airbnb. As far as I understand Airbnb would only allow bookings if the payment method has been verified at the time of the reservation. Once that happened the host sees the reservation.
I’ve heard of hosts complaining that they didn’t receive payments on BDC but for us they also handle our payments and collect the funds directly from the customer at the time of the reservation. We always got paid.
If a scammer was trying his rip-off, how would that work? I’m talking specifically about reservations made on Airbnb and not off-platform. What do I need to keep my eyes on to make sure I’m not a victim.
The process they use to validate credit cards is quite unclear and may still be evolving, or it might not be equally strict across all foreign markets. Even a card containing just one dollar could be considered valid. I experienced multiple issues with payments, including a damage charge for a last-minute booking involving extra guests, minors under 18, and a payment made by a ‘friend’ (two years older than them). In the end, the company -or their insurance partner - covered the costs. When such a shit happens you will see ‘Awaiting payment’ status when it’s time for you to receive the money.
I’ve had numerous same-day bookings with payment issues. Same day bookings are common for me and I’m fine with them, but when there is an issue with payment it then blocks my listing. I have gotten to the point where I immediately contact ABB and have them cancel the reservation. I don’t play anymore.
