Article: What even is AirBnB anymore?

Yes, that’s a good price. There are a few other shared room places around that price. The separate spaces tend to be over $100 a night for the summer. The place I will probably stay is under $60 but it’s outside of town about 20 minutes and is a room in a house. It’s also got 250 5 star reviews. Maybe this 4 star place is showing in my results due to be bookmarking other places in that price range.

Check out the stairs, wow those are to code (not!).

Those look better than the ladders to lofts I’ve been seeing.

Another thing that happens is that when Airbnb does finally take down the 4 star listing or the listing that violates policy, the owner just changes their name, puts it in the girlfriend’s name, uses a different email address and starts over. I’m not speculating, I’ve seen it first hand.

The only “there there” for Airbnb - besides the brand - is that they make money on holding the money paid for bookings. Sometimes they hold it for a quite a long time. They make money on all that money.

Just a reminder that there is now a book now, pay half option. That’s what I’m using for my Boston trip and the second half isn’t due until July. And if they are going to move to the hotel model then they will keep going that direction.

The power of the brand is impressive given how new they are. People in the US constantly frame a search for lodging as “hotel or Airbnb.” “Airbnb” is the “proprietary eponym” for alternative lodging. If they manage to find ways to leverage that brand it could be significant. Travel insurance, tours, media, lodging, OTA…I wouldn’t underestimate them.

Actually I think they are to code. There are houses near me in a gated country club golf community that have stairs like that that dot even have the hand railing and are steeper, and are to code.

The cost in time alone would not be worth the $92.06 payout, and I wouldn’t win that since they didn’t stay.

Maybe there is some exception that applies, bec. it looks like treads need to be 10 inches deep according to the IRC, and in that pic they look to be, what, maybe 3 inches –

R311.7.5.2 Treads. The tread depth shall be not less than 10 inches (254 mm). The tread depth shall
be measured horizontally between the vertical planes of the foremost projection of adjacent treads
and at a right angle to the tread’s leading edge.

If you look closely you will see that alternating halves of the tread are wide enough to pass code.

Only the ultramega wealthy will be able to go on true vacations. Or maybe it will just be the 22nd century equivalent of a movie or a book.

Ah right, I see what you are saying. But the entire tread, not being 10 inches deep … that leads to a heart attack angle. Someone with vertigo would have a hard time going down, and someone with bad knees couldn’t go up.

Do you know if there is a restriction on the “angle” of the stairs? I.e., so they aren’t steep as in the pic.

I just need a swag and a backpack and I’ll be right

I don’t know but based on the fact that the ones here are steeper than in your picture I would guess either no or that the angle has to be sufficient to allow for the required minimum tread width to be fully accessible from the step above.

Makes sense.

… We should go in the inspecting bidness on the side …

I actually thought about it for half a second each time I accompanied the home inspector when I bought a house. After the first one I felt like I was the one having to point things out to the inspector and explain why it was/could be an issue…lol

Had a debate with the new neighbors about all the hideous work done by the rehabber on their property, they said “oh the inspector said it was a great rehab,” lord I didn’t even know where to start on THAT comment. “Those guys don’t know anything,” said I … who doesn’t know that plenty of them are hacks on the take. “What, you think you know more than the inspector?” they said. (eye roll from me – oh hell yeahz.).
