The story told by the OP might well be true, or it might not. I find it hard to believe that anyone would spend all this money with no meaningful preparation.
Either way, I guess, we all get to be shocked and shake our heads that a prospective host would do so many things wrong.

New year resolution. Which was a very daft thing to do, I know. Well.
I still drink on Fridays and my goodness, I don’t half make up for a wine-free week.
Aye, a wee bit daft.
Mine is that I only drink Oloroso on days that end in a “y”, the rest is just gin or rum.
Not being in the land of oloroso just now means I’ve even got days in the sherry bank 
Sorry for going off topic. That’s another one, I promise to only wander off topic on days where the month has less than 32 days.

‘In the bank’ is a good way of looking at it. I’m sure I drink more wine on Fridays now than I used to during all the rest of the week!
