Airbnb Host Activism

I’m definitely guilty of discriminating against freeloaders

Today I declined an inquiry that asked for late check out.

It sounds like you are all about inclusion for everyone who thinks like you…? Don’t lose sight of your underlying morals of EVERYONE is equal. By refusing to host persons different from yourself you become the prejudice you claim not to be? Besides, how does this matter as an Airbnb? Doctors can not decide who to treat and who not to based on personal prejudices and neither should anyone…this only divides us more as a race. Just because someone has a different opinion or beliefs doesn’t make them evil…some dogs like some cats:)

Poor analogy. Everyone needs health care and doctors have the Hippocratic oath to honor. Renting an Airbnb isn’t a matter of life or death.

And, as a matter of fact, doctors are refusing to perform abortions, even when the life of the mother or fetus is under threat, in red states that have passed abortion bans based on the personal prejudices of politicians.

Not wanting to have people around you whose views you find abhorrent and dangerous has nothing to do with considering them unequal.

And some doctors refused to treat the unvaccinated a year ago. As a lifelong leftie (can’t say liberal any more, as the word has been adopted by neo-liberals) I am equally appalled at refusing medical choice wrt abortion or vax. I’m pretty uncomfortable with the lockstep blue-maga tone here (from most)… don’t know what else to say. I thought this was a group to support airbnb hosts, not a cheering squad for the Democratic Party’s platform.

I have never been more disgusted in a thread in my entire life! I couldn’t even imagine caring about what political party someone aligns with or what religious beliefs they have or if they believe in abortion rights or sexual preference someone has or what gender they identify with when it comes to my rental. The discrimination & bias in this thread is shocking, to make it worse it is in the guise of standing up for ‘inclusivity’. To deny or discriminate against anyone who thinks differently than you is the exact opposite of being inclusive, or tolerant for that matter. Being biased is an unreasoned & unfair distortion of judgement in favor of or against a person! I suggest you all look in the mirror & put your moral compasses in check! The world does not need more division that you are trying to promote or think is ok! I can’t even imagine thinking I am better than someone else because we are different! Promoting discrimination, bias & intolerance? Shame on you!

Dog whistles / gaslighting from a criminal under 4 indictments. No, fighting bias is not discrimination.

Disgusting. Those who pride themselves on inclusion are the most exclusive and blind to promoting intolerance. There is a reason Airbnb has a policy that bans your behavior, because it’s disgusting. How does it feel to have beliefs that must be regulated because they break every norm of tolerance and acceptance of others?

I agree! Using ‘freedom’ as an excuse to not sell food to LGBTQ folks, or to not cater their weddings, etc, is the very essence of bigotry disguised as “American Exceptionalism”. Easy to spot them tho, since they wear goofy red caps…

No it doesn’t. And what behavior? No one here has said they wouldn’t rent to someone with opposing political views.
And in case you haven’t noticed, liberals aren’t the ones banning books, passing “Don’t say Gay” laws, forcing raped, impregnated children to travel to a different state for an abortion, or banning the teaching of Black history.

As a democrat from NC, I would certainly object to this idea. With the gerrymandered districts in my state, our state legislature is run by a minority. I love the idea of a welcoming rainbow sign, or something similar. You may still get some folks who have opposing political views, but not many!

Hopefully the spirit of renting your property is one of sharing without judgement, both with your guests and your guests with you. We don’t feel the need to put up signage or hints about who we welcome, because the fact that you are willing to open your property to the world on a website that is open to the world, also implies that you welcome everyone. Yes, it’s smart to prescreen your guests for prior disrepsctful stays with other hosts, whether that’s violence, crime, theft, drug abuse and other violations of your rules, but come on… politics?

What about left wing bigots?

why not? Unless they are freeloaders and ask for 9 am check in and 10 pm check out.

Nope. Not even that.

West Virginia was a deep blue state for many, many years. Switchover to red started around the Regan years, I think.

I actually had the “not even fit for that” thought after I wrote that.

Funny how the right takes a word like “inclusivity” and bends it to cow a liberal into accepting bigoted ideas at the risk of being labeled a hypocrite.

Very left person here in Iowa, I hate the politics here too. I’ve found telling people, “I’m from Iowa orignally, but spent almost 20 years in Seattle” shuts them up when it comes to politics. The complete disregard for environmental issues here (and I’ve never considered myself an environmentalist) and education makes me very, very glad I’m not raising young daughters. I worry for my neighbors who are.

That being said, I’ll talk to my guests if they want to talk to me, but don’t bring up anything like politics, gun control, abortion, anything like that. Once we finish remodeling our house and move in the bottom floor of the duplex, the rainbow flag will proudly fly and if people don’t want to book, then I don’t want their business. The neighbors on both sides there are religious (one is a minister, no idea what flavor) but both seems like very good neighbors, so we’ll live and let live if they do.

I’ve learned not to assume what someone’s politics are based on the fact that they are religious. The people whose little house I property managed were born-again Christians, but were non-judgemental about what others choose to believe, about smoking marijuana, weren’t the least bit racist or homophobic, believed in separation of church and state, and were horrified by Trump.

Seems a lot of people these days have forgotten the true meaning of what it means to be a Christian and follow the purported (because we only know what other people claimed he did and said) teachings of Jesus.
