If they can’t afford to pay here and now, let someone else book the place.
I don’t understand the decline advice. Airbnb already has a way to pay half now and half later. I booked a place in March and paid half. The other half wasn’t due until less than a month before our arrival.

I couldn’t care less how they pay but I’m certainly not doing some kind of handshake agreement. Book on the platform is what I responded. I accept all bookings. My reviews sometimes suffer for it but my bookings are solid

Yes I’ve had these bookings before. One of them failed to pay the remainder and I ended up with half the booking and open nights.
