Air fresheners, natural and unnatural

I haven’t heard of any of those brands, so here’s what I’d recommend: be sure you aren’t tempted to use them internally and dilute them with some sort of oil (olive, grapeseed, coconut) if you put them on your skin. As you’re intending to use them for cleaning/scent, you should be fine. Finding a diffuser would be nice to run in the room as you’re cleaning. I would recommend sweet orange, lemon, peppermint, lavender, tea tree and they make germ killing blends often called Thieves Blend (named after 4 thieves during the plague who would rub plant oils on and enter homes and rob them) that’s great to kill germs.

There are so many ways to mix them for cleaning, light scent if that’s what you want, killing germs, etc.

Of the ones listed, lemon, bergamot and mint sound the best. They smell “clean” to me.

Frankincense reminds me of Catholic mass, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I’m not sure that’s what I’d want an Airbnb to smell like.

I personally like lavender but some don’t.

For me, sandalwood = Old Spice (grandpa aftershave )

Hi @Sarah_Warren, @Garden1Gnome,

Thank you for your recommendations. Just to be clear, I wasn’t asking for comments about the brands, just about the flavors of essential oils. Since I don’t know anything about them. I’ll experiment, and hope I don’t blow anything up.

Flowers/flowers.

I always put fresh flowers, in the apartment and instead of putting a whole bunch in one vase I put them all separate in a small vase each one by one… so i can put them everywhere, bathroom toilet, living room bedroom etc…I use mostly lilies

Hi Faheem, don’t be put off by marketing hype. If you’re using EOs for non-therapeutic or cosmetic purposes, you don’t need to buy expensive ones. The problen is that buying them in small quantities is VERY expensive because the expense for the reseller is in the packaging. I buy Essential Oils in litre bottles which is usually a saving of over 100% on the price of small bottles.

But of course, you don’t need a litre. If you just want to try out the idea of a few oils, I can send you some sample tiny bottles … at the moment I have plenty of lavender, orange, lemon, lemongrass, cedar, bergamot, peppermint and I am desperate to offload some cinnamon. Send me a message if you’re interested.

Otherwise, the only well-known brand on your link is Ancient Wisdom, who are pretty good, but as I say, don’t feel you have to buy the most expensive. It’s not completely unknown for EOs to be adulterated, but it’s pretty rare …

Thanks for the offer, @Malagachica, but you do realise I’m in India, right? The shipping costs would be… significant. And you’re in Spain, right? That’s not exactly next door. Hmm, I’ve got guests arriving from Barcelona tomorrow morning…

I like a pleasant smell when I enter a place. As well as a nice appearance. I have rented hotel rooms that smell stale and want to avoid that if there happens to be a few days between guests.

9.50 euros for up to 500 grams, which would give you about 6 bottles of 10 mls each. Think about it …

Hi @Malagachica,

That’s a pretty good rate. Does that include any insurance? It would not be terribly surprising if such a package went astray. Possibly in customs.

I use diluted lavender or eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle. Natural and non toxic

One time when I subbed high school and wore my favorite fragrance, the kids walked in the class and one said, “ewwww it smells like my gramma in here.”

I bought these peppermint oil plugins. It is awesome! Smells good, natural and gets rid of spiders, cockroaches, mice etc.

I am making my own citrus oil as I have a huge orange tree as well as a lemon tree.

I soak citrus peels in vinegar and use as cleaning spay. It is so much better than bleach!
