Taxes: Air should be collecting everywhere!

My understanding is that AIrbnb and other STR platforms actually arent’ allowed to collect any taxes for the hosts, unless the city/state first authorizes them to do so. That’s why Airbnb doesn’t just do this in every region.

Here in Belize they get 9% from hotel stays. 1.75% income tax though and like $25 annually for real estate ‘tax’.

That’s right… that is why they lobby the state when a bill for it comes up. You should have seen how HARD they pushed us to write in favor of it when Hawaii considered it. It passed both the house and senate and then the governor vetoed, saying it didn’t address the many illegal rentals on Oahu and Kauai. Until Air had a plan for that (purge them, etc.?) he was not going to sign. Asked them to reintroduce a better bill next session. Meantime, taxes are on us to collect.

@konacoconutz You rather they attach it right, so you don’t have to mess with it when guests arrive?

Yes, MUCH rather! So much easier than bugging them for cash… :frowning:
